All team sports information reports that Delmon Young belted a three-run homer for the second straight game and Kevin Slowey pitched six strong innings, as the Minnesota Twins earned a 4-2 victory over the struggling New York Yankees in the rubber match of a three-game series at the Metrodome. Brian Buscher also knocked in a run for the Twins and Joe Mauer returned to the lineup with two hits and two runs scored after sitting out Tuesday's 12- inning loss with a sore neck. Minnesota started the day one-half game behind Chicago in the AL Central.
Slowey (9-8) won his second straight start and improved to 3-1 in his last four outings for his MLB team. He gave up a run in the first inning for the first time this year and settled down from there, yielding just three hits overall with a walk and a strikeout. Darrell Rasner (5-9), back in the rotation after a relief outing against the Angels on Friday, took the loss for New York. He was charged with three runs -- two earned -- on four hits and one walk with four strikeouts in five innings.
Jason Giambi drove in a run for the Yankees MLB team, who completed a disastrous road trip at 3-7. All team sports information reports that New York was without shortstop Derek Jeter, who fouled a ball off his left foot on Tuesday and was given the day off. Young, who belted a three-run homer in the eighth inning against Mariano Rivera to tie Tuesday's game, erased a 1-0 Minnesota deficit with another big blast in the fourth inning Wednesday for his MLB team. After Mauer walked, Justin Morneau hit a slow chopper to third. Alex Rodriguez threw to second for the apparent force out, but Robinson Cano pulled his foot off the bag before the ball arrived and was charged with an error. One out later, Young drilled a pitch over the fence in right-center field for his seventh home run and a 3-1 lead.
Minnesota closer Joe Nathan, working for the third straight game, surrendered a two-out walk to Cano in the ninth before fanning Ivan Rodriguez to end the game and notch his 32nd save for his MLB team.
