One blast gave the Philadelphia Phillies a commanding 2-0 lead in their National League Division series on Thursday.
Centre-fielder Shane Victorino drilled a grand slam off Milwaukee starter CC Sabathia in the second inning, guiding the Phillies MLB team to a 5-2 win over the Brewers in Philadelphia.
The victory means Philadelphia can wrap up the best-of-five series if they can topple the Brewers on Saturday (6:35 p.m. ET) in Milwaukee.
Aside from his first career grand slam, Victorino collected three hits and also earned a walk reports all team sports information. Phillies starting pitcher Brett Myers was outstanding in the win for Philadelphia, allowing only two runs in seven innings while striking out four for his MLB team.
The wheels came off early for Sabathia, who pitched his fourth start on just three days rest. Sabathia lasted only 3 2/3 innings, surrendering five runs and four walks.
Sabathia, who was acquired on July 7 by the Brewers, had been brilliant during his previous three starts, going 2-1 with an earned-run average of 0.83 in those outings for his MLB team.
Myers had control problems himself in the top of first, leading to a 1-0 Milwaukee advantage. The Philly hurler walked shortstop J.J. Hardy — the third walk of the inning — with the bases loaded to score Ray Durham on the play.
Philadelphia broke the game open in the second, highlighted by the Victorino grand slam.
Third baseman Pedro Feliz's double to left scored Jayson Werth to pull the Phillies even before the fireworks began.
With Feliz at third, Sabathia walked Myers after a nine-pitch at-bat, and then gave Jimmy Rollins a free pass to load the bases.
Facing his seventh hitter of the inning, Sabathia hung a breaking ball over the plate, which Victorino deposited into the left-field seats to the roaring approval of the Philly faithful.
Myers was congratulated by his appreciative MLB team when he came home as his walk came with two outs. It was the first time since the Brewers traded Sabathia that he allowed five runs in one inning.
Sabathia's night ended in the fourth when he walked Chase Utley to load the bases. Mitch Stetter relieved the Brewers starter and struck out Ryan Howard looking to end the inning.
