MLB teamWhite Sox slugger Carlos Quentin will undergo surgery Monday on his fractured right wrist and will be re-evaluated in two to three weeks reports all team sports information.

Quentin didn't rule out returning but called his right wrist fracture "a freak thing." He said he hurt it while fouling off a pitch in his final at-bat Monday, slamming his right hand against the knob of the bat.

Quentin denied strongly that he slammed his hand against a locker in Boston.

"I'm staying optimistic," Quentin said while ruling out reports the injury is career-threatening.
The operation is a serious blow to the Sox's American League Central MLB team title hopes. Quentin leads the Sox and the American League with 36 home runs and has a team-high 100 RBIs as well.

He will undergo surgery at Rush University Medical Center, and the procedure will be performed by team hand and wrist specialists, Dr. Mark Cohen and Dr. John Fernandez, and White Sox lead orthopedic surgeon Dr. Charles Bush-Joseph of Midwest Orthopedics at Rush University.

A screw will be inserted to aid with the healing process.

Quentin went hitless in his four at-bats Monday at Cleveland for MLB team, including a game-ending double play. He was scheduled to start Tuesday night but was scratched before batting practice and had returned Wednesday to Chicago for an examination before his MLB team completed their three-game series at Cleveland.

The loss of Quentin, his 36 home runs and fearlessness at the plate means that the Sox will need Ken Griffey Jr. and others to step up. Griffey has been sidelined recently by tightness in his lower back.

Third baseman Joe Crede, who has also been experiencing some injury problems lately, left the clubhouse to get a second opinion on his back.

"I'm not counting on him any time soon," manager Ozzie Guillen said.

The MLB team also said outfielder DeWayne Wise has been activated from the 15-day disabled list.

The White Sox open a three-game series at home with the Angels Friday night. They are in first place in the American League Central Division, 1½ games in from of Minnesota.

The regular season ends with a three-game home series with Cleveland Sept. 26-28.
