After posting the first-ever winless season in NFL history, the NFL team Detroit Lions are looking ahead this year with a new logo unveiled at a media conference Monday. The forward-slanting type and fiercer mascot are meant to convey a “sense of mission and direction,” according to NFL team personnel. As if there was any other way to respond to a 0-16 season.
Credit Detroit with taking steps to move forward, but preseason workouts have revealed some very big holes that redesigned uniforms just can’t fill. Weaknesses at key positions including quarterback, offensive tackle, and a huge gap at middle linebacker could have the Lions struggling for wins again this year. The NFL team Lions need talent at so many positions that it would actually benefit them more to trade their number one selection at this weekend’s draft for a later pick. Assuming no other NFL team wants to deal with the contract and salary commitments that come with the number one pick, Detroit will be forced to make a decision. Georgia QB Matthew Stafford might be a good fit, but his inconsistency could result in more of the same disappointment for Detroit sports fans this season. Another possibility is Wake Forest’s Aaron Curry who could step in right away at middle linebacker, but would need time to adjust to playing inside. Ideally, the Lions would figure out a way to get Boston College defensive tackle B.J. Raji—a solid, physical player who could bring some much-needed bulk to the defensive line.
No matter what they decide to do, the NFL team Lions probably won’t be winning the Super Bowl this year. But even if Detroit goes winless again this season, at least they’ll look good doing it.
