Dallas Mavericks NBA team owner Mark Cuban is known for being an in-your-face, emotional kind of guy. The billionaire businessman has been in trouble with the NBA to the tune of about $1 million in fines for behavior unbecoming of an owner throughout his tenure in Dallas. So it’s no surprise that Cuban would be a little heated after a blatant missed call cost the Mavs Game 3 to the NBA team Denver Nuggets. But Cuban’s alleged conduct after the game is something else. Several media outlets have reported that as Cuban made his way out of the arena he noticed Nuggets’ forward Kenyon Martin’s mother, Lydia Moore, standing at her seat near the tunnel. Looking up at her, Cuban supposedly said, “Your son is a punk.” Happy Mother’s Day, Ms. Moore.
All Team Sports Information is not naïve enough to think that NBA team trash talk is G-rated stuff. Sure, it gets ugly. We’ve all seen the “oops” moments when a player clearly mouths something inappropriate during a TV slow-motion replay. But for an NBA team owner to get so personal—with a player’s mom, no less—is unacceptable. Credit Cuban for being passionate about his NBA team, but sitting courtside is a privilege. Just because you happen to own the team doesn’t mean you get to play by a different set of rules. If Cuban has such a hard time taking a loss, maybe he belongs up in a luxury box like the other owners. That way, he can say whatever he wants and no one has to hear him.
