New York Yankees MLB team player Alex Rodriguez has certainly had an interesting 2009 so far. Since admitting earlier this year to using performance enhancing drugs while a player for the MLB team Texas Rangers, he’s had hip surgery, been in physical rehab, worked out the kinks in the minors, and has finally come back to New York ready to get on with things. Having been forced to defend his decisions to teammates past and present, as well as managers, MLB team personnel, his family and the media, Rodriguez definitely has a cloud hanging over him this year. So it’s understandable that he’d want to leave no doubt about anything in his first game back at Rangers Ballpark since his steroid scandal broke.
Rodriguez insisted in post-game interviews that he didn’t feel any extra motivation in coming back to Texas, but that’s typical A-Rod. No matter how coolly crafted your public persona, though, any true competitor would be more than driven to prove something after the struggles Rodriguez has gone through this year. And if he’s anything, MLB team player A-Rod is competitive.
Rodriguez went 5 for 5 on the afternoon, matched his career high for hits in a single game, and drove in four runs as the MLB team Yankees destroyed the MLB team Rangers 11-1. His performance bumped his batting average from .189 to .259, a full 70 points. Admit it or not, Mr. Rodriguez, but that’s called making a statement.
