The 2009 Stanley Cup is getting a little closer every night for the eight NHL teams left in the playoffs. With three of the four series tied at a game apiece, this is shaping up to be one of the most competitive NHL postseasons in recent memory.
In the East, the NHL team Boston Bruins and Carolina Hurricanes have fought hard to a one-all tie. The Bruins took a decisive 4-1 win in Game 1, but Carolina goalkeeper Cam Ward had 36 saves in Game 2 as the ‘Canes went on to a 3-0 victory.
The NHL team Washington Capitals took Game 1 from the Pittsburgh Penguins, as sports stars Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin went head-to-head in the most anticipated match-up of the postseason. The Caps came out ahead again in Game 2, downing the Pens 4-3 to take a 2-0 series lead.
The Western Conference semis haven’t disappointed thus far, either. The NHL team Detroit Redwings downed the Anaheim Ducks in Game 1, winning 3-2. But the Ducks bounced back with a clutch goal by Todd Marchant in the 3rd overtime of Game 2 to take a 4-3 win. This could be the most exciting series to watch from here on out.
In the second Western semifinal, the NHL team Vancouver Canucks and Chicago Blackhawks are in the middle of another tough series. Chicago nearly rallied to get the win in Game 1, but Vancouver held on to take it 5-3. Game 2 was all Chicago as the Blackhawks scored five unanswered goals to end the night with a convincing 6-3 win.
With so much great hockey going on lately, it’s a shame that spring is just around the corner.
