All team sports information reports that NFL team Giants released linebacker Antonio Pierce on Thursday. Pierce was a 2006 Pro Bowl selection, and was placed on injured reserve on the last day of November this past season because of a bulging disc in his neck. Over nine NFL games he had 55 tackles and one sack.
Pierce has spent the last five seasons with the Giants, and his tenure with New York included the incident in 2008 when former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself in the thigh. Pierce was with Burress at the time but was cleared of all criminal charges.
Pierce said winning the Super Bowl was his proudest moment from a NFL team standpoint, while having the respect of his fellow players was his personal highlight.
Pierce still feels he can play, adding his neck injury should not be a problem if he wants to play a 10th NFL season.Pierce, 31, played the first four years of his NFL career with the Washington Redskins. Over 124 career games, he has compiled 692 tackles, 8.5 sacks and seven interceptions.
